TDF and Corona

April 14, 2020

Dear friends of The Dariu Foundation

Firstly, I hope you are all well and in good spirits! The world stands still – while at the same time there are challenges beyond comparison for all of us.

I would like to use this opportunity to give you a short update on how Covid-19 affects our activities.

Luckily, Vietnam hasn’t been hit hard by the virus. However, the authorities have taken the same measurements as most other countries did: restaurants, movies etc. are closed, grocery shops and pharmacies remain open, no gatherings of more than 30 people, international travel has been suspended etc. etc. That means that all the kindergartens we have constructed are now closed to further notice, schools at all levels have halted their teaching and the students must stay at home.

Confronted with this situation, we are pushing our online training program for 400 teachers within the next 2 weeks. Further, we plan to provide online training to 2000 students in April and May and continue with the vocational training scholarship program online for approximately 40 students.

There are currently 3 scenarios regarding school re-openings: 1. early May. 2. June/July 3. August. How does that affect our DLI program? Our original target was to train 300’000 students in DLI in 2020. If schools resume in May, we look at 252’000 students. If they re-open in June/July, we can still train 225’000 kids – and with the worst case scenario, August, we look at 210’000 students.

In order to continue this important education, we have developed online lessons , posted on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCDxl-ysWBN3Vo8hmdA7JiuQ/videos  which the children can do at home. The number of views proofs it a success!

Vingroup still plans to invest in 100 classrooms we could use for our training program and  – this is very good news – Google has joined our project. And in Myanmar we have identified a new partner for our DLI – Pilotproject is starting soon.

These are grim times but I do hope that we all take this crisis as a chance to come together as humans and look out for each other. Be assured that we do everything we can to keep our good work up.

Stay safe!

Warm regards,

Thomas Trüb
